STURGIS, S.D. — The St. Thomas More Lady Cavaliers, the #1 ranked team in Class A, used pinpoint passing and stellar shooting to down the Sturgis Scoopers at West Gym Thursday night, 61-22.
The Lady Cavs came into the matchup unbeaten, with a 12-0 record, including a signature win on Jan. 8 against the former #1 team in Class AA, Sioux Falls Washington.
St Thomas More shot 8 of 14 from the field in the first quarter to take a commanding 18-5 lead after one. Senior Haleigh Timmer scored seven points in the quarter for the Lady Cavs, and then added five more in the second as St. Thomas More took a 34-9 into the locker room at the half.
The Scoopers could only manage three points in the third quarter and the Lady Cavaliers extended their lead to 48-12 headed into the fourth. Joellen Cano had the hot hand for Sturgis in the fourth, dropping in two long three pointers but STM outscored the Scoopers 13-10 in the quarter on their way to a 61-22 win.
Cano led the Scoopers (5-8) in the scorebook with nine points. Sturgis shot 18% from the field and had 18 turnovers and 20 rebounds. Timmer ended the game with 20 points and six boards for the Lady Cavs, who shot a blistering 47% from the field as a team. Timmer had three of STM’s seven three pointers. The Lady Cavaliers had 10 turnovers and 27 rebounds and remain unbeaten at 13-0.
The Scooper girls and boys teams travel to Rapid City Stevens on Saturday afternoon to take on the Raiders at Carrold Heier Gymnasium. The girls game is scheduled to tip off at 1:30pm.
