State B Wrestling First Round – Philip advances 10 wrestlers

RAPID CITY, S.D. – The first round has wrapped up at the South Dakota Class B Wrestling Tournament in Rapid City.

The Philip Scotties had a fabulous first round, advancing 10 wrestlers on to the next round in the championship bracket Friday.

Kipp Cordes kicked things off for the Scotties with a win at 106 pounds – a 5-2  decision over Bryce Hawkinson. At 113 pounds, Jace Blasius won his opening round match against Ian Metz of Sisseton with an 8-3 decision. At 120, Ryker Peterson won a 7-2 decision over Brody Dybvig of Tri Valley. Jadyn Coller at 126 won an 11-3 decision over Jude Sargent of Winner and at 132 Thane Simons advances with a pin over Landon Sudbeck of Parkston. Blair Blassius won his 145 match over Chase Chambers of Clear Lake and McCoy Peterson won his opening match at 152 with a pin over Anthony Benda of Tiospa Zina. Burk Blasius advances with a 9-1  decision over Levi Stover of Stanley County and Jesse Hostutler won at 182 with a 3-1 decision over Nolan Dvorak of Wagner. Cody Donnelly won his first round match with a pin over Alex Andresen of Tri Valley at 195.

Philip Scotties dropping their first round matches were Gage Ravallette at 138 and Parker Snyder at 170.

Other area wrestlers that picked up first round wins include Tray Weiss of Custer at 106, Landon Woodward of Custer at 120, Parker Noem of  Custer at 160, Caleb Rickenbach of Hot Springs and Cody Rakow of Lead-Deadwood at 170, Caleb McGregor of Newell at 195, and Grey Gilbert of Harding County at 220.

There were some upsets in the opening round, including Chase VanDerBoom of Newell, who dropped his first round match to Brandon Bosworth pf Mount Vernon/Plankinton/Stickney in a 15-5 decision.

Area wrestlers dropping their opening matchups included Cade Costello of Harding County and Leighton Sander of Custer at 113, Cade Martian of Harding County at 120, Pierce Sword of Custer and Hunter Way of Hill City at 126, Braden Weiss of Hill City and Tyson Durham of St Thomas More at 132, Jaxon Johnson of Hill City and Mikael Grace of Custer at 138, Jonathan Lewis of Custer at 145, Sterling  Sword of Custer at 152, Luke Bodine of St Thomas More at 160, Elijah Steele of Custer at 170, Keaton Bissonnette of Hot Springs and Richard Long of Harding County at 182, Zayne Severyn of Custer at 195, Ryder Bailey of Custer and Tanner Davis of Hill City at 220 and Carter Estes of Lead-Deadwood at 285.

Team standings after round 1 show Canton in first place with 45.5 points, Winner in second with 40.5, Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes and Philip are tied for third with 30.

Second round action gets underway Friday morning at 10:00 a.m.
