State health department reports 417 new COVID-19 cases, 16 new deaths

PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota health officials reported 417 new cases of COVID-19 Saturday – a total that spans two days after a report was not issued on Christmas Day.

Along with the new cases were 16 new deaths. The new deaths send the state’s death toll to 1,446. Among the deaths were one in Pennington, one in Butte and one in Fall River County.

Active cases are down slightly to 7,089 and the number of people hospitalized due to the virus dropped 23 to 289.

New cases across West River counties totaled 118.

Pennington had 60 of the cases and Meade and Lawrence counties each added 12.

Active cases in Pennington County are below 1,000 to 988. In Meade County, active cases have fallen to 168 and in Lawrence County, they have dipped to 155.

Other new cases across West River included 13 in Dewey, 6 in Perkins, 4 in Ziebach, 3 each in Fall River and Oglala Lakota, 2 each in Butte and Todd and one in Haakon.
