State High School Rodeo-Haugen off to great start

FORT PIERRE, S.D. – The 1st go of the State High School Rodeo Finals got off to a great start for Arina Haugen of Sturgis.

Haugen turned in one of the fastest times in the Barrel Racing with a 17.798. She is sitting in third place with 39 points. Buffalo’s Sattyn Wilson is in first with 43 points. She turned in a time of 17.785 Thursday. Wall’s Jayda Heinert is second with 41 points.

Haugen is also having a fantastic run in the  Breakaway, scoring a 3.360 time Thursday; she sits in first place with 33 points. A half point behind is Rylee Price of Faith who turned in an equally impressive time of 3.46. Shaine Weishaar of Belle Fourche is third overall with 30.50 points.

Hazin Schmidt of White River leads the Bull Riding with 44 points. He turned in a 72 point ride Thursday and was bested only by Wynn Lawrence of White River with a 73. Lawrence is sitting in third overall.

In the Goat Tying, Mataya Ward of Fruitdale is in first with 45 points. Her time of 6.480 was among the fastest Thursday.

In the Pole Bending,  Arina Haugen leads with 44 points, courtesy of her 20.832 time Thursday. Buffalo’s Aspen Vining is second with 39 points and Wall’s Terryn Shearer is third with 33 points.

In the Saddle Bronc, Rope Roghair is in first overall with 45 points. His 60 point ride was among the best Thursday. Hoven’s Ethan Johnson is second with 40 points.

In the Steer Wrestling, Gabe Glines of Smithwick is first overall with 41 points, tied with Braydon Terveen-Smith of Eagle Butte. Buffalo’s Trey Tetrault is third.

In the Team Roping, the Belle Fourche duo of Rance Bowden and Sern Weishaar are at the top overall with 44 points and a first go round score of 7.580 was among the best Thursday.

And in the Tiedown, Paden Belkham of Blunt leads the overall with 44 points. Rance Bowden of Belle Fourche is second. Belkhma had one of the top times Thursday with a 10.620.

Taycie Matthews of the University of West Alabama won her second consecutive college national championship in barrel racing at the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyoming. Matthews was back riding Fame Fire Rocks (PopRocks) after an eight-month layoff and didn’t miss a beat. She won three of four rounds and finished second in the other while leading her school to the women’s team championship.
