State records 457 new COVID-19 cases and adds 6 new deaths Friday

STURGIS, S.D. – State health officials reported 457 new COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours and active numbers jumped another 216 to 3,507.

The Friday report also indicated six new COVID-19 deaths. The state has recorded 14 deaths over the past two days – the highest 48 hour count since the pandemic began. The 49 deaths reported in September have also made this month the deadliest since the pandemic started.

Of the 6 new deaths reported, 5 were men and 1 was a woman. Three were listed in the 80+ age range, 2 in the 50-59 age range and 1 70-79 age range. Two new deaths were in Gregory County, 1 in Minnehaha County, 1 in Butte County, 1 in Douglas County and 1 in Meade County.  Meade County has now recorded 5 total COVID-19–related deaths.

On the Department of Health COVID-19 website, the number of hospitalizations today showed 194 – the same as yesterday. It’s not known if the number hasn’t been updated or if there was no change in the number of hospitalizations.

New cases around the Black Hills area include 56 in Pennington County, where the total number of cases is nearing 2,200. Today’s new cases raise the cumulative total to 2,198 with 384 remaining active. Active cases in Pennington are up 32 today.

Meade County had 9 new cases Friday, giving them a cumulative total of 509 with 113 remaining active. Active cases are up 4 Friday.

Lawrence County added another 7 new cases, raising the cumulative total to 380 with 93 remaining active. Active cases are up 2 today in Lawrence.

Butte County reported 5 new cases, sending the total to 91 with 27 active.

Other new cases around the Black Hills area include 9 in Oglala Lakota, 2 in Custer and one in Fall River counties.

A total of 2,286 new persons tested was reported on Friday.
