PIERRE, S.D. – The Department of Health reported a lower number of new COVID-19 cases Tuesday as 80 positive tests were confirmed.
Along with the lower number of new cases was a decrease in the number of active cases statewide, which fell 40 to 1,530.
Around the immediate Black Hills area, there were 29 new COVID-19 cases reported.
In Pennington County, 12 new positive tests sent the county’s cumulative total to 1,082. Of those, 179 are active cases. The active cases are up six today.
In Meade County, 6 new COVID-19 cases were reported, sending the cumulative total to 176 with 70 of them remaining active. The active number of cases is up 3 Tuesday.
Lawrence County had an additional 5 new cases, giving them a total of 125 with 57 active.
Custer County, where Monument Health announced a cluster at its Custer Care Center, saw 4 new cases Tuesday, sending the total to 90 with 47 active.
Also in the Black Hills area, Butte County reported two additional cases. Butte County has seen 31 total cases with 12 remaining active.
Also good news today, the number of people hospitalized due to COVID-19 tumbled 12 today to 53. And, total recoveries are now at 9,814, up 120 from Monday.
There were 216 new person test results reported on Tuesday. That’s the lowest amount of new tests reported since April 30.
There were no new deaths reported, so the state’s death toll remains at 161.
Meanwhile, the South Dakota School of Mines reported two COVID-19 cases since Friday.
President Jim Rankin said in an email that the Department of Health has been notified and contract tracing is being conducted.
He says students experiencing symptoms should call Student Health at 394-2354 to schedule a test. Rankin says anyone who has close contact with a COVID-19 positive individual must quarantine and monitor symptoms for 14 days.
