STURGIS, S.D. – South Dakota reports an uptick in the number of people hospitalized due to COVID-19 in their Tuesday report.
Health officials say 329 people are currently hospitalized – up 25 from Monday. In the Black Hills, the number of COVID-19 patients occupying general hospital beds total 76 with 9 occupying I.C.U. beds. That is just over 14-percent of total beds. Most of those are hospitalized at Monument Health in Rapid City, with Spearfish reporting 5 and Sturgis reporting 2.
Also reaching a new high are active cases, which hit 8,441 Tuesday.
The health department reported 562 new cases and an additional seven people have died. There are now 107 reported COVID-19 related deaths in October – the deadliest month since the pandemic started.
New cases across West River totaled 238 with Pennington County accounting for the most with 96. Pennington County saw their active cases rise by 38 to 842.
The second highest new case total today was out of hard-hit Oglala Lakota County, who reported an additional 30 new cases Tuesday raising their cumulative total to 614 with 275 active cases.
Elsewhere around the Black Hills area, Meade County reported 15 new cases today, sending the cumulative total to 810 with 161 active. Lawrence County added 17 new cases, sending the cumulative total to 693 with 171 active.
Other new cases across West River today included 26 in Todd, 9 in Custer, 7 in Dewey, 6 in Jackson, 5 in Mellette, 4 each in Butte, Tripp and Bennett, 3 in Ziebach, 2 each in Fall River, Haakon, Stanley, Lyman and Gregory and one each in Harding and Perkins counties.
