SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Top seeded Sioux Falls Washington rolled to a 3-0 set victory over Rapid City Stevens Thursday as the Class AA State Volleyball tournament got underway.
Washington won set 1 byt the score 25-11, set 2, 25-20 and set 3, 25-20.
The Warriors were led by Joslyn Richardson’s 20 kills and Macie Malchow’s 30 Aces.
Stevens was led by Isabell Higgins’ 7 kills and 9 aces. Carsyn Mettler added 10 aces for the Raiders.
In the day’s other matchup, Sioux Falls Jefferson defeated Pierre 3-1.
In other early action Thursday:
Elk Point Jefferson stunned top seeded Wagner, winning 3 sets to 1 at the Class A tournament. The Huskies won sets one and two by a score of 25-21 and 25-23. They then dropped the third set 25-23, but held off a rally from the Red Raiders in set four to win it 27-25.
Elk Point-Jefferson has had a tremendous post-season. They swept Beresford at home in the first round of regionals, then swept the C-Hawks in Canton, and took out Rapid City Christian 3-0 in the SoDak 16 to get to state. Up next they’ll have to play Sioux Falls Christian, the five-time defending champs in Class A.
Fourth seeded Sioux Falls Christian defeated Dakota Valley 3-0 in the day’s second match.
In Class B, top seeded Warner escaped with a 3-1 win over Freeman and Wolsey-Wessington outlasted Northwestern 3-2.
