RAPID CITY, SD – The St. Thomas More volleyball team beat the Sturgis Scoopers in three sets, 25-21, 25-18 and 26-24 on Tuesday night.
The Scoopers jumped out to an early lead in the first set before the Cavaliers ripped off nine straight points to take a 21-12 lead. Sturgis battled back within two points after seven straight points of their own, but STM held on for a 25-21 victory in set one.
Both teams battled throughout set two before the Cavaliers scored eight straight to lead 19-14, enroute to a 25-18 set win.
Sturgis jumped out to a 6-0 lead in set three but it was a battle to the end, as the Cavs and Scoops traded leads. STM outlasted Sturgis 26-24 in the third stanza to take the match, 3-0.
Joellen Cano led Sturgis (0-7) with 19 assists, 1 ace and two kills. Sophomore Reece Ross had 14 kills and one ace for St. Thomas More (3-3).
The Scoopers host their first home game against Rapid City Christian on Thursday night at West Gym. First serve is scheduled for 7pm.
