STURGIS, S.D. – An early Spring storm will be moving through the area today and the Winter Storm Warning issued was extended overnight.
The northern hills and foothills of Sturgis and Piedmont were already in the warning when it was issued yesterday. Overnight, the National Weather Service added all of southwestern South Dakota to the warning.
The warning extends out across the western South Dakota plains and becomes a blizzard warning for central South Dakota.
A winter weather advisory is in effect for Butte and Perkins county with no advisories up for Harding County.
Forecaster say the storm will bring heavy snow across the warning area today. Strong gusty northerly winds will develop this afternoon with the highest speeds (above 50 MPH) over south-central South Dakota as blizzard conditions develop. Travel will be very difficult where warnings are in place today.
Sturgis and the immediate area could see 4-6 inches of snow today before it tapers off tonight.
Once this storm passes, a nice weekend is on tap before another storm system moves in early next week. That next system is forecast to move in Monday night and bring significant snow heading into Tuesday and Wednesday.
