Structure Fire leads to grass fire east-southeast of Keystone in Hayward area

KEYSTONE, S.D. – Great Plains Fire Dispatch says crews are battling a wildfire Sunday night that began as a structure fire east-southeast of Keystone in the Hayward area near Highway 40.

The fire was reported just after 2:00 p.m. as crews responded to a structure fire on Thomas Place. The fire then spread to nearby grass between homes on Thomas Place and George Place.

Great Plains says structures are being threatened by the fire and that a large air tanker was being called in to help.

As of Sunday night, the fire had burned approximately 15 acres and was listed at 50% contained. There have been no official evacuations ordered at this time.

Firefighters were hoping for calmer winds and cooler temperatures overnight.
