Students scammed over COVID relief funding

PIERRE, SD – As if college students aren’t feeling enough stress with returning to school in the middle of a pandemic, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) is warning of targeted scams.

Jesse Schmidt of South Dakota’s BBB office says college students are getting e-mails regarding COVID relief funding and invited to “click here” to learn more.

“Before you click on the link or share any of your sensitive information, we would tell you to check it out first,” said Schmidt. “Don’t click on that link because you could be downloading malware to your mobile devises, to tablets, or to university property.”

She says some phishing emails look  legitimate but poor grammar and spelling can be a tip-off to a phishing attempt. Another clue the email is not really from your school is the wrong department’s title is used.

Contact the BBB at 800-649-6814 if unsure of something that could possibly be a scam.
