STURGIS, S.D. – The Sturgis City Council ultimately discussed, but then tabled action on a proposal by businessman San Monahan to allocate his royalty payment for his dad’s rally mark the city uses to the Sturgis Community Center.
Monahan says he would like the $3,500 payment be used for a rock climbing wall at the center.
Usually, Monahan’s royalty payment goes to the general fund.
Council members say they like his idea, but fear granting a variance could lead to a precedent.
Sturgis Ward 3 Alderman Jim Thompson said:
Monahan said at the meeting that ”If I was in your place, I would invite all 25 of them to come,” Monahan responded. “Plead their case. Let’s hear it.”
The council decided to send the issue back to Legal and Finance and will revisit the issue in November.
