Sturgis City Council meeting moved to Jan. 9

STURGIS, S.D. – The Sturgis City Council’s first regular meeting of January has been moved to Jan. 9.

The meeting had been scheduled for Monday, Jan. 6, but the council decided that it would be more efficient to move the meeting until after the Jan. 7, special municipal election because the council would need to canvass the votes from the election.

The election features races for Ward 1 and Ward 3 on the Sturgis City Council.

Candidates for the Ward 1 seat, which was vacated when Mike Bachand resigned in October, are Alex Usera and Ryan Klima.

Candidates for the Ward 3 council seat, which was vacated when Don Lanpher resigned in October, include David Murtha, Mark Chaplin, Richelle Bruch and Jennessa Dempsey.

Once the votes are canvassed for races in Ward 1 and Ward 3, the winners will be sworn in to office, Mayor Kevin Forrester said. In the event of a recount, the affected candidate will not be sworn in to office until after the recount is completed.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in the council chambers at Sturgis City Hall, 1040 Harley-Davidson Way.
