Sturgis Council agrees with D.O.T. study to remove stop lights at 8th Street

STURGIS, S.D. – The City of Sturgis will be less one set of stop lights after a Department of Transportation study indicates the lights are no longer needed.

At Tuesday night’s meeting, the council heard from public works head Rick Bush on the D.O.T. study that shows the signal at Lazelle and 8th Street is no longer warranted at the intersection.

The D.O.T. studied traffic volume, pedestrian activity, intersection crash history and the physical environment in order to determine whether or not the intersection warrants a traffic signal.

Bush says the study confirmed the signal is no longer needed and instead, a stop sign should be installed at the intersection on 8th Street.

He says the signal heads would be removed and stored, but recommended the rest of the infrastructure remain so the lights could be used during the annual motorcycle rally if needed.

The council unanimously agreed with D.O.T.’s decision and recommended the signal’s removal.
