Sturgis Council approves medical cannabis cultivation license for The Crop Shop

STURGIS, S.D. – The Sturgis City Council approved a medical cannabis cultivation license for The Crop Shop at their meeting Monday night.

The facility will be located at 2951 Whitewood Service Road and is owned by Mike Barck.

The current zoning is General Industrial, so a cannabis cultivation facility is a permitted use within this district. The city currently has no cap on the number of licenses of this type that can be issued.

Barck says they will abide by all the city ordinance regulations and their hope is to provide 12 full time jobs.

He says operations will be 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There will be no public access nor signage placed on the building.

Council President Beka Zerbst says medical cannabis used here in South Dakota will need to be grown in South Dakota. However, the state of South Dakota is still putting together its final rules and regulations for municipalities regarding medical cannabis.
