STURGIS, S.D. – The Sturgis City Council Monday night approved the next step in the development of a Lakeside Adventure Park.
The council on a unanimous vote approved a professional services agreement for the design and construction administration of the park – which is being planned for property the city purchased last year on Vanocker Canyon Road.
The firms that completed the feasibility study for the park – CRS Design and Tallgrass Landscape Adventure – and the private development proposal joined together to present a proposal for the adventure park design.
The design will combine the suggestions received from the public during past information gathering exercises and also from future meetings.
Among the amenities the park would include are inflatable adventure courses, a splash pad, zero entry sand beach, miniature golf, waterslides and playground.
After the preliminary design is completed, an operational plan for the project will be developed. The plan will ultimately include what features would be available year-round at no cost and which amenities would have a reasonable fee in order to ensure that the operation of the park pays for itself.
Initial design discussions could begin in the spring and the city hopes to open bidding for the project in the third quarter of this year.
