Sturgis Council approves rally contracts; gets peek at 2023 budget

STURGIS, S.D. – The Sturgis Council approved eight rally-related contracts at their Monday night meeting.

The sponsorship agreements are with Brown-Forman Corporation, Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys; Custom Chrome U.S.A., L.L.C.; H.B Fuller Company, or GorillaPro; Patch Shop Roadshows L.L.C.; Rockford Corporation; Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States and T.W.A. Worldwide, also known as Swisher Sweets.

The council last night also got their first presentation on the $31.3 million dollar 2023 budget.

Sturgis City Manager Daniel Ainslie says the city’s general fund is in a very strong position, with a reserve of 41-percent of its 2021 operational budget.

The total general fund budget is listed at just over $10-million, 975-thousand dollars. That is up from 2022’s $10-milion, 85-thousand dollars.

Ainslie says the final mill levy in 2023 is estimated at 4.086.

Ainslie says based on the draft total assessed valuation provided by the county and the requested property tax revenue; the city will have reduced its property tax rate by 48.5-percent since 2013.

The reduction in property taxes has been funded through an increase thanks to a larger variety of revenue, including increased profitability of the Liquor Store, Motorcycle Rally, sales tax revenue and increased contractor licenses and building permits.

First reading of the 2023 budget is expected to take place at the August 23 council meeting.
