STURGIS, S.D. – It wasn’t a unanimous vote, but the Sturgis City Council this week passed an agenda item that would sign a listing agreement with Mecum to auction off two surplus motorcycles.
Sturgis City Councilor Kevin Forrester says there was some discussion on the item Monday night.
There is still come concern with Mecum Auctions following a donated motorcycle that went to auction this past summer and failed to bring in the city’s reserve price.
The motorcycle, in turn, was bought by City Attorney Mark Marshall for $21,000, who then sold the bike to Indian Motorcycle in Sturgis, who expressed interest in buying the bike but did not have an account with Mecum.
Because the purchase was through Mecum at auction, Marshall has said he did not believe South Dakota law prevented him from bidding at the auction.
