STURGIS, S.D. – After a 90 minute executive session, the council held discussion on two letters of intent involving potential sales to the Meade 46-1 School District.
The council approved authorizing the mayor to sign a letter of intent that would eventually allow the district to purchase Woodle Field.
The city owns Woodle Field, but the school district provides upkeep and care.
Sturgis Public Works Director Rick Bush says the L.O.I. begins a long process yet before any money changes hands.
The LWCF is the Land, Water, Conservation Fund Program in which most of the city’s soccer fields and park land is part of. Bush says that means in selling Woodle Field, it would need to replace it with like property to be use for recreational uses. The city is looking at the Marcotte and Richards Property.
The MEade 36-1 School District is planning some major improvements to Woodle Field, including a possible new artificial surface.
The second L.O.I. got a lot more discussion after a strategic plan surfaced this past week from the AMA Racing and American Flat Trackers that would rejuvenate the half mile on the property for future racing.
Racing enthusiasts propose attempting to garner federal or state grants to fix up the property in hopes of attracting national motorcycle and national races to the historic track.
The council voted 7-1 to table taking action on the plan until January to allow for more discussion on the future of the property.
