Sturgis Council awards bid for 7th Street low water crossing project

STURGIS, S.D. – The Sturgis Council has awarded the bid to construct the new 7th Street low water crossing.

The council on Monday night awarded the approximate $1.2 million-dollar project to Heavy Constructors of Rapid City.

Sturgis Building Inspector Dave Smith says the low bid amount was higher than the original FEMA estimate from 2019, but after discussing with the South Dakota Office of Emergency Management, they were advised that the additional funding would be procured at project closeout.

The city will be responsible for 15-percent of the total project cost – which is approximately $190,743.

Smith is hoping the project can begin in the fall.

The new low water crossing will replace the bridge that was washed out due to flooding in the summer of 2019.
