STURGIS, S.D. – The Sturgis City Council Tuesday night decided not to authorize the mayor to sign a letter of intent with the Meade 46-1 School District to sell approximately 9 acres of the fairgrounds property.
The issue was tabled last fall after representatives from AMA Racing and American Flat Trackers brought forward an idea to restore the half-mile dirt track. A portion of the track was included in the proposed property sale.
Racing enthusiasts propose attempting to garner federal or state grants to fix up the property in hopes of attracting national motorcycle and national races to the historic track.
Meade 46-1 School Superintendent Wayne Wormstadt told council members they were looking at the property for long term growth.
Sturgis City Administrator Aaron Jordan felt it would be good to include the property in the city’s comprehensive plan and a good question for the community to be involved in.
Superintendent Wormstadt says he appreciated the council discussing it and remained committed to working with the city in the future.
The council, after a motion to approve the sale was seconded, unanimously denied it. In doing so, council members pledged to make talk about the fairgrounds part of their upcoming comprehensive plan discussions.
