STURGIS, S.D. – The Sturgis City Council Monday night denied an appeal by Sturgis Meat Service following a citation issued to the business alleging the discharge of blood into the city’s wastewater system.
Council members received information about the alleged violation in which city staff witnessed the blood draining into the sanitary sewer system outside the business.
Video of the incident which was recorded on March 21 was shown as evidence.
Cindy Tolle, owner of Sturgis Meats, denies the allegations and says they do not violate any of the City’s Ordinances.
She testified to the council on her appeal that a USDA inspector is on the floor at all times and blood is collected in garbage cans and shipped to Belle Fourche…
Tolle also disputed claims by city staff who said workers at the facility told them blood was being dumped down the drains – including one worker by the name of Blade. Tolle says she has a worker by that name, but has denied saying that.
After an executive session, the council denied Tolle’s appeal and found in favor of the citation. Alderman Jim Thompson was the lone council member to vote for the appeal.
The violation is considered a Class 2 misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $500 and/or 30 days in jail.
