STURGIS, S.D. – In the past few years, the popularity of mobile food vendors or food trucks has substantially increased.
The increase is a result of the many events occurring throughout the year and also stems from the inability to secure brick-and-mortar business locations within the city.
The State generally regulates mobile food vendor health and safety through its licensing system. However, the proposed mobile food vendor ordinance goes beyond the State’s minimal regulations and is more geared towards zoning regulations, such as where a mobile food vendor may operate, and ensures the vendor complies with local sales tax requirements.
A proposed permit would require a mobile food vendor to apply for a $75.00 annual permit. The purpose of the permit is to ensure the vendor has all necessary state licenses and is compliant with city regulations.
The council is expected to hold a first reading on a proposed ordinance in the near future.
