Sturgis Council April 7 Recap.

Sturgis Council gets Dept. Updates, retains legal services for lease dispute

STURGIS, S.D. – The Sturgis City Council met for their first meeting in April Monday with a busy agenda.

The council first got an update on the cemetery, first quarter expenses as well as a preview of the city’s responsibilities for the upcoming 85th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

Due to budget constraints, the city’s sponsored events this year for the rally are significantly less than in previous year’s.

The city will still host the annual Police Chief Ride, Mayor’s Ride, Opening Ceremony, Military Appreciation Day and daily band performances at Harley Davidson Rally Point – although the number of bands and performances have been cut in half.

Following department updates, the council unanimously approved the annual retail malt beverage and wine license renewals and authorized the mayor to sign a letter of intention to retain legal services for a case involving Kenny Price.

The city has a past history of leasing several parcels from Mr. Price, who recently gave notice that he was canceling the lease.

Eric Davis with Nelson Law Firm, believes the city is owed damages as a result of what is viewed as a breach of the lease by Mr. Price.

Davis has recommended the hiring of Jared Nooney of the Nooney and Solay law firm in Rapid City to represent the city in the dispute.

The council unanimously approved the request.
