Sturgis Council holds first meeting of New Year

STURGIS, S.D. – The Sturgis City Council held their first meeting of the year Tuesday night with a discussion of audit items and passage of annual resolutions.

Jeff Yennie, a C.P.A. with Ketel Thorstenson, was on hand to answer questions concerning the city’s budget and the profit/loss analysis the city does of the annual City of Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

Each year, the city does a profit/loss analysis of the Rally, but that information has not been included in the annual audit. Sturgis Council President Beka Zerbst says there is a reason for that.

Zerbst explains the reason for it being called ‘un-audited’

Zerbst says Ketel Thorstenson has been doing the books for the city of Sturgis for a dozen years and the state’s Department of Revenue’s also looks at the city’s finances.

The council Monday night also approved annual resolutions. These resolutions are meant to coordinate and facilitate the day to day administrative affairs of the City.

One resolution, the Rally Leases and Sponsorship agreement, was set aside for further council discussion.
