STURGIS, S.D. – The Sturgis City Council held their second July meeting on Monday night.
The council got an update on the May 2022 Sales Tax report.
Sales in the month of May 2022 were 3.9% lower than May of 2021. Sales for the first five months of 2022 were 4.3% higher than the same time period in 2021. January through May represented 32% of total sales in 2021. The current trend would provide a surplus in the General Fund of $107,878 in 2022.
The preliminary 2023 budget assumes a total collection of sales tax that is 4.7% higher than the current 2022 trend.
The council also passed second and final reading of Ordinance 2022-08, which is the Property Maintenance Code.
The purpose of the Property Maintenance Code is to provide standards which apply to existing buildings and structures to ensure they maintain to be safe for the occupants and the general public.
These regulations ensure that regular maintenance is completed on these buildings and significantly damaged buildings are either repaired or demolished as necessary to ensure the safety and well– being of the community.
Alderman Aaron Jordan joined KBHB News on Tuesday, July 19 to discuss the council meeting. Jay Johnson with the Sturgis Santiation Department also discussed the city’s recycling program.
