STURGIS, S.D. – The Sturgis City Council on Monday night passed second and final reading of its redistricting ordinance.
Redistricting was required following the release of the latest census, which shows Sturgis has grown to 7,020 people.
Sturgis City Manager Daniel Ainslie says Sturgis will still have four wards. He says using the population of 7,020, each ward should have approximately 1,755 citizens.
The city had several options, with option #6 being the most accurate with the new numbers.
Ainslie says “in this option, to the north, there would be Ward 1, and that one would kind of grow further south. So, it would include all of Sturgis up to Sherman Street and then the division between Wards 2 and 3 would essentially be Junction Avenue. Then, to the south, I-90, would separate Ward 4. ”
