Sturgis Council passes TIF to help pay for new Sturgis Adventure Park

STURGIS, S.D. – A proposed Sturgis Lakeside Adventure Park took a big step forward as the City Council approved a Tax Increment Finance District to help pay for it Monday night.

TIF District #25 was approved unanimously and is expected to raise approximately $4 million to be used for associated costs of the park and surrounding development.

Sturgis Mayor Mark Carstensen says this process will make sure a new park wouldn’t be a cost burden on Sturgis residents.

The city purchased 77 acres of property from the Richards family earlier this year off Vanocker Canyon Road south of town. It held promise for not only the proposed park, but much needed homes and retail space.

Carstensen says the next step is to come up with a design.

The council last night also approved TIF District #24, which will raise approximately $1.75 million for proposed improvements and development on the north side of Vanocker Canyon Road.
