STURGIS, S.D. – The Sturgis City Council met in special session Monday night, and after nearly three hours, passed first reading of their new Title 7 ordinance – a necessity since the formation of new city government.
Council spent the time cleaning up some language in the ordinance, along with some additions and changes being requested.
Councilor Jim Thompson joined with Council President Kevin Forrester in changing votes by ballot for president and vice-president from private to public.
Sturgis City Attorney suggested removing the word ballot and adding in public vote.
Also added are monthly budget reports for council. Councilor Forrester has been a leading advocate for such reports.
The Title 7 rewrite has involved a lot of work for council in the aftermath of an April vote that eliminated the city manager form of government. It will be the blueprint for the city moving forward and included a job description for a City Administrator should the city decide to hire one.
The council last night also approved a number of license, sponsorship and lease agreement renewals. Among them were a license agreement with AMA for merchandise related to the upcoming Sturgis TT race on the final day of this year’s rally.
The council tabled a Marketing Agreement for this year’s AMAP half mile AFT race until next week’s meeting.
