STURGIS, S.D. – The Sturgis City Council Monday night decided to table second reading of the year’s first supplement to the 2023 budget.
That’s after receiving some citizen concerns about a $300,000 supplement for Rally Merchandise.
This year, the city is partnering with year-round downtown and regional businesses to offer city merchandise for sale throughout the tourist season. The program would require the purchase of additional inventory.
Some business owners, however, felt $300,000 was a little too much.
The merchandise features the new Sturgis “Winged-S” logo.
Sturgis City Manager Daniel Ainslie says they’re trying to develop the new brand.
But, business owner Sam Monahan was among those with concerns.
Monahan, however, says the “Winged S” hasn’t been a big seller for them, compared to the official rally logo.
Council president Kevin Forrester decided to gather more information on the subject and motioned to table second reading of the budget supplemental appropriation. His motion was approved unanimously.
The council also last night approved second and final reading its revised Title 7 Ordinance, which defines how city government operates.
Mayor Mark Carstensen said the city wants to better clarify the roles and responsibilities of elected officials and city staff specifically when it comes to appointments to committees and boards.
