STURGIS, S.D. – A Sturgis couple who have been a consistent presence in the Meade County 4-H program are being recognized at this years Meade County Fair & 4-H Achievement Days.
When Sawyer, N.D., native Sandy Buchholz moved to Sturgis to take a teaching position, she never imagined her work and personal life would merge to include not only a family of four but also the Meade County 4-H family.
After settling in Sturgis, she met Steve, a handsome UPS driver from Philip, SD. They have two children, Molly and Brady, who started 4-H at the ages of 8 and 6.
Sandy held the position of Bear Butte 4-H Club leader for many years. Throughout her years as leader she helped her children and club to grow into community leaders.
She is instrumental in the static exhibit portion of the Meade County Fair & 4-H Achievement Days, helping to organize exhibits and judging so that youth can display and take pride in their creations.
Sandy has also been a large part of the Brandon Delzer Memoral 5K. Her social media marketing made last years event one of the largest in recent history.
“She is absolutely a delight to work with in all of her volunteering projects… patient, kind, organized, intelligent and wonderful with people,” say Fair organizers.
While Steve hasn’t held an official title, he does hold the very important unofficial title of “Husband to a Club Leader.” That translates to many hours carrying heavy things at the county fair, shuttling kids around, and being a fair project personal attendant. Steve is always available to help at the fair and is excited to assist anyone and to find a project to work on.
Over the years, Steve and Sandy have been a consistent presence in Meade County 4-H. With their own kids growing up in 4-H, they know the many benefits of ‘growing up 4-H.’
Look for the biggest smiles in the fair barn and you’ll find the duo, Steve and Sandy, pitching in together to help bring the Meade County 4-H program to kids, families and the public.
