RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Sturgis Scooper girls used a tough woman-to-woman defense to hold the Rapid City Central Cobblers to seven first half points on their way to a 42-33 win, Friday night at Naasz Gymnasium.
In the nightcap, the Cobbler boys sprinted out to a 33-21 halftime lead and kept their foot on the gas pedal, handing the Scoopers their fifth loss of the season, 58-35.
The Scooper girls jumped out to a quick 13-6 led after the first quarter behind five points from junior point guard Tori Williams, then extended their lead to 25-7 at the half. The Sturgis defense forced 16 first half Cobbler turnovers.
The Scoopers used balanced scoring in the third quarter to take a 33-15 lead in to the fourth, then held on for a 42-33 victory, improving to 3-3 on the season.
The Scoopers made 15 of 54 field goals (27%), six of 14 free throws (42%), committed 19 turnovers and grabbed 26 rebounds. Williams hit two three pointers and finished with 15 points. Addy Kossler added 10 points for Sturgis.
Rapid City Central was led by Leah Landry with 23 points and seven boards. The Cobblers shot 30% from the field, 30% from the charity stripe, had 28 rebounds and 22 turnovers. Central dropped to 0-8 on the year.
The Rapid City Central boys outscored the Scoopers 16-11 in the first quarter, then Gilbert White took over for Central, dropping in nine points in the second quarter to give the Cobblers a 33-21 lead at intermission.
Sturgis couldn’t get within 10 points of within Rapid City Central in the second half and the Cobblers ran away with a 58-35 victory.
The Cobblers (3-5) made 23 of 48 shots from the field (47%), eight of 13 charity tosses (61%) and were led by White with 26 points. Junior Allen added 11 points. Central had nine turnovers and 24 rebounds.
Sturgis (2-5) didn’t have a scorer in double figures and were led by Teigen Wormstadt with seven points. The Scoopers shot 29% from the field, making 14 of 47 shots, and 42% from the free throw line, canning six of 14. Sturgis had 15 turnovers and 22 rebounds.
The Scooper boys and girls are in action on Saturday, as they host Rapid City Stevens. The girls tip off is scheduled for 1pm.
