RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Sturgis Scoopers had 6 wrestlers win their opening matches as the State A Wrestling Tournament got under way in Rapid City.
For the Scoopers, Korbin Osborn opened up the action with a win over Lincoln Schoenhard of Pierre. Following that up was Logan DeSersa at 126 with an 8-2 decision win over Dominic Santiago. At 132, Kelton Olson earned a win over Aiden Kracht of Spearfish and at 138, Perry Ketelson won by fall over Thomas Powell of Chamberlain. Wren Jacobs, now 22-1 on the season, won by fall in :40 seconds over Sutton Bern of Madison at 160 and Reese Jacobs won by fall in 3:21 over Tate Elwein of Mitchell at 170.
Dropping their first round matches for Sturgis were Beau Peters at 113, Maverick Simons at 120, Harrison Good at 152, Robert Merwin at 182, Aiden Werlinger at 195, Zak Juelfs at 220 and Buck Fickbohm at 285. Peters lost by 9-0 decision to Andrew Weiland of Dell Rapids, Simons lost Tanner Bahm of Yankton, Good lost a 10-0 decision to Deegan Houska of Pierre, Merwin lost a 7-3 decision to Gavin Stotts of Pierre, Werlinger dropped a 4-2 decision to Brock Eitreim of Watertown, Juelfs was pinned by Owen Warren of Brandon Valley and Fickbohm lost by fall to Sebastian Cardona of Huron.
Other area athletes picking up first round wins included Evan Eckholm of Stevens at 106, Josh Hoffman of Spearfish and Jack Schoenhard of Stevens at 113, Logan Graf of Stevens at 120, Cael Larson of Rapid City Central and Corter Doney of Stevens at 138, Zack Soderlin of Central, Bryan Roselles of Stevens and Oakley Blakeman of Spearfish at 145, Bailey Badwound of Spearfish, T.J. Morrison of Central and Riley Benson of Stevens at 152, Payton DeWitt of Douglas and Tyler Voorhees of Stevens at 160, Ryan Brink of Stevens at 195, and Eli Huot of Stevens at 220.
In the team standings, Brandon Valley and Watertown are tied at the top with 35 points each. Rapid City Stevens is third with 31, Pierre is fourth with 28 and Mitchell is fifth with 25. The Sturgis Scoopers are sitting in 7th place with 20.5 points.
Second round of action begins Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m.
