Sturgis holds discussion over Clydesdale’s and Motorcycles as rally approaches

STURGIS, S.D. – The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is a little over two weeks away, and the city is working on logistics for the opening ceremony to be held on Friday, August 4th.

One of the planned events, however, is facing some logistic nightmares.

Sturgis Mayor Mark Carstensen says they have been working with Anheuser Busch to bring the world-famous Budweiser Clydesdale’s down Main Street to Harley Davidson Rally Point – headquarters for the opening ceremony.

However, due to the size of the horses and the wagon they pull, they would need plenty of room to get down Main Street. That task becomes difficult because Friday is the day Main Street closes to motorcycle only traffic – and motorcycles tend to park in the middle of Main Street as well as along the side.

Sturgis Public Works Director Rich Bush:

Sturgis Police Chief Geody Vandewater agrees. He says, unfortunately, common sense does not prevail when it comes to parking:

There was discussion sending the Clydesdales in to Rally Point via Lazelle Street to Harley Davidson Way, but no action was taken. Mayor Carstensen says they will need to come up with a decision soon since the Rally is closing in fast.
