STURGIS, S.D. – The Sturgis City Council met in special session last night, following Tuesday’s sudden resignation of Mayor Mark Carstensen.
The meeting, which lasted about 40 minutes, was held to discuss the next phase in appointing a mayor to fill out Carstensen’s remaining term.
The council, on a motion made by Vice President Angela Wilkerson, decided to open up a two week window in which they would accept applications for those interested from the public or council.
The motion also targeted the first meeting in March as a potential date to choose a candidate.
The council is unable at this point and time to hold a special election to fill the vacancy.
Sturgis City Attorney Mark Marshall explained why.
In the interim, Sturgis Council President Beka Zerbst will serve as interim mayor.
