STURGIS —The city of Sturgis hosted an evening to honor veterans and offer support for its Gold Star Families Memorial Monument at Harley-Davidson Rally Point Saturday night.
The event included a free dinner, live entertainment, youth events and a fun run/walk. The first 150 participants of the run/walk received a Salute to Our Heroes Challenge Coin.
The evening was an opportunity for the Gold Star Monument Committee to share information on the monument, which is slated to begin construction this year.
The Sturgis City Council approved its construction earlier this year.
This would be the first Gold Star Families Memorial Monument in South Dakota. The Hershel Woody Williams Medal of Honor Foundation is behind the monument effort with the hope of constructing a memorial in as many communities as possible in all 50 states.
A Gold Star Family is the immediate family member(s) of a fallen service member who died while serving in a time of conflict.
