Sturgis Mayor signs off on grant request to study Junction Avenue and Vanocker Canyon Road corridor

STURGIS, S.D. – The Sturgis City Council has authorized the mayor to sign the Statewide Planning and Research grant request for the Junction Avenue and Vanocker Canyon Road Corridor Study.

According to the South Dakota Department of Transportation, one of the busiest corridors is the Junction Avenue corridor that services traffic entering and exiting the I-90 interchange via Exit 32.

This corridor also is a primary access for those neighborhoods south of the Interstate and for vehicular traffic traveling via Vanocker Canyon Road.

One of the areas chosen as a focal study is Junction Avenue between Harmon Street south to Dickson Drive and west to Vanocker Canyon Road. Specific problems in this area include offset road intersections that do not line up on the east and west side of Junction Avenue, which leads to awkward turning patterns. In addition, there are no controlled non-motorized crossings for access to neighborhoods and trails south of the Interstate.

The city would like to focus on the Anna Street and Junction Avenue intersection in particular, as staff believes if a signalized intersection is needed in this area.

The corridor study will be 80-percent funded using federal S.R.P. funds.
