STURGIS, S.D. – Sturgis Police Chief Geody Vandewater, in his update to the city council this week, says they’re looking at updating their firearms.
Vandewater says the goal is to change the caliber.
Vandewater says the department will also need to update its radios.
As for staffing, Vandewater says they are currently fully staffed, although he says some officers are still training. He says they hired three officers this year and an assistant chief. Two officers currently deployed with the South Dakota National Guard are expected back by the end of the year.
Vandewater says they are also doing some restructuring in hopes of adding another detective to take some of the stress off the lone detective currently in office.
