STURGIS, S.D. – The city of Sturgis has updated two potential capital improvement projects that are now not being considered.
The first project involved the city buying the old Caddy’s Restaurant adjoining the Best Western Motel. The city had studied the possibility of demolishing the building and extending Anna Street to Vanocker Canyon Road. The study was the result of a suggestion by the DOT to reroute the existing Vanocker Canyon and Junction Avenue intersection with Anna Street.
However, due to community members expressing concerns with the project, no further action has taken place. The city this week says they have not purchased the building and are not under contract to do so.
Another project that got a lot of community attention was a plan to purchase the Mr. Al’s building on Main Street and design it into a convention center. At the time, the Boulder Canyon Convention Center had recently closed.
However, with the re-opening of the Boulder Canyon Convention Center and after close consideration of the environmental assessment, appraisal and structural report, the city withdrew a purchase offer on the building.
