Sturgis says large crowds, cup sales brisk on first day of Rally

STURGIS, S.D. – Sturgis officials say the city is experiencing large crowds on the first day of the Rally.

The 81st Annual  Sturgis Motorcycle Rally officially began Friday.

Sturgis Public Information Officer Christina Steele says official cup sales are brisk are well. This is the first time the City is allowing ‘open containers’ during the Rally.  Open containers are only allowed when using an official cup between 10 AM and 10 PM.

Steele says the system is working well. Rally participants get a wristband when they show proof of age. It is a requirement for anyone wanting to drink within the open container area.

Steele says as expected, vending licenses have also increased significantly over the past two days.  She says as of Friday, the city had issued 536 temporary vending licenses. This number is slightly ahead of the same date in 2020.

Saturday at the Rally, the annual Mayor’s Ride will leave from the parking lot behind the Sturgis Community Center at 9:00 a.m. The group will ride to Mt. Rushmore and will conclude the ride at Custer State Park with lunch.

The Mayor’s Pub Crawl also takes place Saturday, and begins at 7:00 p.m. at Rally Point.
