Sturgis, Spearfish shine at Early Bird Track and Field

STURGIS, S.D. – The 2024 South Dakota Track and Field season continued with the Early Bird Invite at Woodle Field in Sturgis Thursday.

Aiden Hedderman of Sturgis was a triple winner on the day, capturing the 110 meter hurdles, the 300 meter hurdles and the pole vault.

Landen Matkins of Stevens was a double event winner by taking the 200 and 400 meters. Braden Peterson of Hot Springs won the 100 meters. In the long distance races, Lane Krautschun of Belle Fourche won the 1,600 and Luke Rupert of Hill City won the 3,200 meters.

In the relay races, there were five different winners. Spearfish won the 4×100, Rapid City Central claimed the 4×200, Hot Springs won the 4×400, Hill City took the 4×800 and Custer won the 1,600 meter medley.

In field events, Miles Voight of Sturgis won the shot put.

On the girls side, Spearfish dominated the day. Peyton VanDeese won the 800 meter and 1,600 meter run and her teammate Anna Hoffman swept the 100 and 300 meter hurdles.

Ella Bradeen of Rapid City Stevens was a double event winner, claiming first place in the 100 and 200 meters.

Avery Marler of Sturgis won the 400 meters.

In the relay races, Rapid City Stevens won the 4×100, Spearfish captured the 4×200 and the 4×400, and Sturgis won the 4×800.

In field events, Avery Kirk of Spearfish won the high jump while her teammate Reese Nida won the pole vault.
