Sturgis to apply for housing grants from the state

STURGIS, S.D. – Sturgis council members this week approved a resolution authorizing the submission of grant applications seeking state funding to help with two new housing developments.

The one time grant program was started by the state to assist in the financing of infrastructure necessary to construct new homes.

Sturgis  City Manager Daniel Ainslie says a housing study for the city of Sturgis shows a lack of adequate housing supply for its growing population.

Ainslie says the new grant program from the state requires municipalities to commit equal financing along with the private developer.

Ainslie says the city is preparing two applications – one for the new Vanocker Canyon Estates on the Richards Property and the Harvest Meadows/Valley View Subdivision off Avalanche Road.

The maximum award the city could receive is $2 million dollars.
