Sunday COVID-19 update records 13 new deaths, 546 hospitalizations and 1,426 new cases

STURGIS, S.D. – Health officials reported another deadly day of COVID-19 in South Dakota as active cases soared another 700, 13 people died and hospitalizations rose by 31 Sunday.

The number of new cases hit 1,426 as South Dakota continues to be hit hard by the virus.

For the second day in a row, 13 people reportedly died due to COVID-19 complications giving this weekend 26 deaths alone.

Hospitals across the state remained strained as the number of people receiving care for COVID-19 rose another 31 Sunday to 546. In the Black Hills region, COVID-19 patients account for approximately 30-percent of I.C.U. beds. Coupled with an another 54-percent of I.C.U. beds being used by other patients, the number of beds is at 16.7-percent today. COVID-19 patients account for 22-percent of general hospital beds.

Active cases hit 15,750 Sunday.

New cases around the Black Hills totaled 379. Pennington County added 128 of those, sending the total there to 5,767 and 1,602 cases remain active.

Lawrence County had 54 new cases Sunday and Meade County added 36. in Lawrence, the total rose to 1,349 with 479 active. In Meade, the cumulative total is 1,212 and 293 are active.

Butte County added 12 new cases Sunday to send their total to 498 with 202 remaining active.

Other new cases across West River today include 33 in Dewey, 23 in Oglala Lakota, 14 in Custer, 13 in Todd, 9 in Fall River, 8 in Bennett, 7 each in Stanley and Gregory, 6 each in Ziebach, Lyman and Jackson, 5 in Corson, 3 in Perkins and one in Mellette.
