Sylvia Sack, 92, of Spearfish, passed away on November 16, 2023.
Sylvia Beulah Fritz was born on January 7, 1931, to Wallace and Selma (Klingbeil) Fritz at the “Fritz Homestead”, six miles east of Onida, SD.
She attended school at Blaine and North Buffalo public schools and graduated from Onida High School in 1948. She attended Dickinson Secretarial School in Denver, CO, graduating with a degree in business machines. Sylvia was employed at the State Capital Treasurer’s office in Pierre, SD for two years, where she held the position of Head Bookkeeper.
She was united in marriage to Paul Sack in Clovis, NM on December 4, 1950. They became parents to four children, Sharyce Lynn, Michael Paul, Paula Kay, and Kelly Francis.
Sylvia attended Rich Valley Sunday School and the Mennonite Brethren Church while growing up. She accepted Jesus as her Personal Savior in 1945 at the Mennonite Revival Service. She later attended the Catholic church with her family. Her life was dedicated to serving Jesus and caring for her family. She did not want to leave her young children to be employed outside of the home, so she did babysitting, took in ironing, and boarded high school students for many years. She later sold Avon products and was the Administrative Secretary for the Sully County Conservation District for 24 years.
Sylvia enjoyed doing many kinds of hand sewing, decorative needlework, crocheting and quilting. She sewed most of the family apparel when her children were growing up. She also conducted a “Letter Writing Ministry of Encouragement” in later years.
Her special “Joys in Life” were her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchild. She often spoke of being very blessed to see her family mature into responsible adults. Sylvia and Paul lost their oldest daughter, Shary Kennedy, to cancer in 1999. That was a deep pain she felt to the end of her life.
Grateful to have shared in her life were her children- the late Shary (Jim) Kennedy, Paula (Mark) Mowry, Michael Sack, and Kelly (Annie) Sack; ten grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brothers-in-law Don and Dan Sack; sisters-in-law Carol Sack and Joyce Sack; and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband Paul; daughter Shary; granddaughter Michelle Sack; great-grandson Zion McKillop; her parents; sister Dorothy Bloom; sisters-in-law Madeline Zebroski, Eileen Hofer, Lexie Sack, Nona Sack, Ann Bridges, and Jeannie Johnson; brothers-in-law Leo Johnson, Phil Sack, Louis Sack, Leland Sack, Frank Sack, Bill Bridges, Wilbur Hofer, John Zebroski, and Norman Bloom.
