Targhee breed sweeps Newell Ram Show & Sale

NEWELL, SD – At the Newell Ram Show on Sept. 19 the Targhee breed took home both supreme champions honors for the rams and ewes. Judging the show was Jeff Clark of Sturgis, S.D. He chose Lot #69 from Wooden Nickel Targhee, Hot Springs, S.D. as the overall champion ram. 

He then went on to choose Lot # 70 also from Wooden Nickel Targhee as the champion ewe. 

The Erk Bros. of Newell, SD had the Champion Pen of Range Rams.

The supreme fleece went to Dally Myers of Mud Butte, SD.

Dally Myers, from Mud Butte, SD, brought a tremendous Merino fleece to the 2024 Newell Ram Show and Sale Wool Show to win Supreme Fleece and a $250 premium award.

Other wool show results: Reserve Supreme fleece was Rabel Brothers, Buffalo, WY; Youth champion was the same fleece from Rabel Brothers. Gary Babb Hand Spinning Fleece Award, sponsored by Center of the Nation Wool was a Cheviot fleece from Barb Uhrig

Show judge was Alison Brocher.

The Raymond Garness Memorial Youth Credit went to Brixie Vig of Opal, S.D. She was able to take the $500 credit and apply it towards the purchase of a sheep on sale day at the Newell event.

The next day on Sept. 20 was the ram and ewe sale with Hewitt Land & Cattle commanding the auction block and DV Auction providing online bidding. Just over 190 head of rams and ewes sold to buyers in eight states. The sale averaged $500 for ewes and $845 for rams. 

Top selling lots included Lot 32  Rambouillet Yearling Stud Ram for $1750 sold by Erk Brothers of Newell, SD, and Lot 7 Rambouillet Pair of Yearling Ewes for $900 each sold by Annika Bobb of Taylor, ND.
