Task Force finds areas in need of improvement for the state’s Board of Regents

PIERRE, SD – The Government Operations and Audit Committee of the South Dakota legislature reviewed a long list of financial markers for the Board of Regents at their meeting in Pierre yesterday. (Tuesday)

Regents Executive Director Brian Maher told the committee they are updating their strategic plan. “We’ve recently completed a strategic plan that was put in place in 2014. And we’re in the beginning phase of developing a new strategic plan that will have new performance indicators and new metrics.”

He added, “These new measures are  from the work of the SB55 Task Force where a significant amount of information has come from.”

Maher says the task force report will be part of their new plan. “When the work of the task force is complete, that work will be taken forward through our new strategic plan. Those two topics really dovetail nicely.  The implementation of the new strategic plan and the conclusion of the work of the task force for SB55.”

SB 55 was passed by last years legislature mandating the report on operational efficiencies by the Regents.

Maher says they have come up with four goals. “Those goals are student success, academic quality and performance, research and economic development, and affordability and accountability.

Members of the Regents office then answered detailed financial question from the committee for over an hour.
