TEA, S.D — The Tea Area Titans, unbeaten and ranked #2 in Class 11AA football, scored on their first three possessions enroute to a 57-7 drubbing of the Sturgis Scoopers.
The Titans took advantage of three Scooper turnovers in the first quarter and scored on touchdown runs of 34, six and two yards to lead 21-0 with just over three minutes left in the stanza.
Tea Area added two more touchdown runs of 26 and two yards in the second quarter to lead 35-0 at the half.
The Titans struck quickly again in the second half, as Blake Thompson took the opening kickoff back 95-yards for a touchdown to extend the lead to 42-0. Tea Area’s defense held Sturgis to a three-and-out on their next series, forcing a Scooper punt.
Titan senior running back Chase Van Tol scored again for Tea Area on the next series, sprinting 74-yards down the sideline for his third touchdown of the game. The Titans led 49-0 midway through the third quarter.
The Scoopers didn’t get on the board until 6:35 left in the third quarter on a 65-yard touchdown run by Gunner Rohloff. The extra point by Sully Jost was good and Sturgis trailed 49-7.
Tea Area tacked on one more score with 7:08 left in the game on a 47-yard touchdown run by Dawson Eimers. The Titans got the Homecoming win over the Scoopers, 57-7.
Tea Area (6-0) finished with 392 yards of total offense and were led by Van Tol, who ran for 139 yards and three scores. The Titans had no turnovers and six penalties for 78 yards.
Sturgis (2-4) had 163 yards of offense, 129 yards passing and 34 rushing yards and were led by receiver Tyan Buus, who caught three balls for 58 yards. Junior quarterback Aiden Hedderman, starting for the injured Owen Cass, was 9-of-21 passing for 111 yards. The Scoopers had four turnovers, two fumbles and two interceptions, and two penalties for 10 yards.
The Scoopers are in action next Friday at Woodle Field as they host the Belle Fourche Broncs.
