Teachers visit historic sites ahead of new ed standards

PIERRE, S.D. – The 2024 South Dakota Road Trip: Teachers Discovering History kicked off Monday.

Education Secretary Joe Graves says teachers from across the state will be visiting historic sites along three simultaneous routes in western, central, and eastern South Dakota…..

Graves says there are about 90 teachers on each route. He says when the tours end Thursday, teachers have the opportunity to develop classroom lesson plans based on the information they’ve learned on the trip.

The central route includes stops at the Verendrye Monument and the Casey Tibbs South Dakota Rodeo Center in Fort Pierre and a tour of the State Capitol Building in Pierre. It also features visits to the Akta Lakota Museum and Cultural Center in Chamberlain, the Sutton Rodeo facility at Onida and the Dakota Sunset Museum in Gettysburg.

The History Road Trip is designed to enhance educators’ knowledge of South Dakota history, geography, government, and civics.

The trip is hosted by the Department of Education and is designed to support educators as they work towards implementation of new social studies standards by fall 2025.
