STURGIS, S.D. – A teen who pleaded guilty to fatally shooting a Wyoming girl received a 55 year prison sentence Friday.
Michael Gavin Campbell earlier plead guilty to first-degree manslaughter for killing Shayna Ritthaler, a 16-year-old from Upton, Wyoming. His name was released following his arrest last October because he was initially charged as an adult. Campbell originally pleaded not guilty and not guilty by reason of insanity
In court Friday, Judge Kevin Krull sentenced the 17-year-old Campbell to 55 years in prison. He will have to serve 27 years before being eligible for parole.
During his May plea hearing, Campbell said he and Ritthaler had gotten into an argument at his Blucksberg area home and he shot her in the head.
Prosecutors say the two had been chatting online but met in person for the first time when he killed her in October.
